The thing that struck me most about this week’s reading was the fact that at the time that this article was published, the idea of selling digital art for lots of money was shocking. The article started off by questioning what digital art was and if it was worth monetary value. I am fairly new to the digital art world, only finding my interest in it this past year or so. It just so happens that right around the time digital art became a growing focus in my life, the world was beginning to find a craze in it too – NFT’s. So, if an article was questioning these same things in 2022, the writer would sound ridiculous. Digital art pieces and their value are growing more than ever before, with the most expensive NFT sold for $69.3 million dollars (art made by Mike Winkelmann).

That is more expensive than Jeff Koons’s 2013 Balloon Dog (Orange) which they sold for $58.4 million. At the time, the article said that this was the “most expensive work of art (by a living artist, at any rate) ever to sell at auction.” Looking back at it now, the digital art made by Mike Winkelmann far surpasses Jeff Koons’s balloon dog art piece above and beyond his already outstanding price.

Michael Green, who created the $5,800 Gif, was on the cusp of what would be taking off the world in years to come. Artists like himself, whether they knew it at the time or not, were paving the way for other digital artists to grow immensely, finally see the popularity, attention and monetary compensation for their work that they were so often left out of beforehand.

It is also just beautiful to see growth and change in the way the world perceives and values art, as this may be a glimpse into what the future holds for not just digital art, but all artists in the future. With technology constantly changing and adapting to life around us, it opens the door for endless possibilities. All art is being seen for its importance, and hopefully will continue this way going forward.
